If you add a bit of honey to your mother's recipe for carrots, you have an Ashkenazi classic tzimmes that I grew up eating. My non-Jewish husband, who dislikes most vegetables, loves it.

I really enjoyed your and Matin's interview with Diane Rehm-- a blast from the past, as I was a regular listener to the Friday News Roundup on WAMU.

I love the links between cuisines! Honey sounds like a really good addition. I shall try it.

Diane Rehm is a tremendous supporter of people, particularly of women. A National Treasure.

Love fact Russian for parsnip is Pasternak. So author of Dr Zhivago is Boris Parsnip. French supermarkets sell grated carrots in little pots which is instant lunch

It's actually really hard to get vegetables when travelling around SE Asia! Endless stir-fried morning glory and water spinach etc, but as far as being veggie there goes, EVERYTHING is cooked using either fish or oyster sauce. It's like Japanese food, so vegan friendly if it weren't for all the dashi and bonito...

During my latest trip around Việt Nam I was desperate for a salad in Mui Ne, and spent the next 24h crapping my guts out. Forgot the leaves would have been rinsed in tap water, didn't I? 🙄

A Tabled reader A Season in Hell wrote a comment which appeared in my Inbox but for some reason hasn't emerged here on the site - perhaps because it is in Spanish? Who knows. But here it is, pasted:

A Season in Hell commented on your post The roots of anti-vegism: carrots? .

Hello, Correct me (It could be the translator), but you say that vegetables, greens and fruit are not produced in Spain. Spain is the largest producer of these foods in Europe. You just have to visit Almería, Murcia and the Valencian Community, to see the surface of land that is cultivated with these products. The Greenhouses In Murcia And Almería Can Be Seen From Space, Here We Call Them The Sea Of Plastic. In Spain there is a large vegetarian population, thanks to the large production of these foods. Greetings

My answer: I should have been clearer. There's no doubt Spain has a huge industry in growing fruits and vegetables. So much of the produce supply in UK supermarkets comes from Spain. What I wanted to convey, though, was that this isn't reflected on menus in Spanish restaurants where there isn't a wide selection of vegetables on offer. Official figures on the number of vegetarians in the nation aren't tremendously high.

Please be so kind as to tell me the brand of carrot shredder you have. I have looked at several online but none seem quite like yours. Thank you

I've had it a while so can't be 100% positive, but I would guess it is by Good Grips. It has that signature chunky rubber handle. I hope that helps.

Your mum’s recipe for carrots sounds delicious. It will be on my list of recipes to try.

I also love the Boris Parsnip mention. It reminds me of something my husband told me. He had a friend at lucée named Jean Bon. Say it quickly!
