I'm inclined to ditch the historical meat and stick to Delia Smith's fruits only recipe. I've also made it with vegetable oil not suet, to suit vegetarians and vegans, with no loss of flavour. It basically tastes like a wet Christmas cake.
oh my God, this looks amazing -- I never really knew what mincemeat was until this moment. It was served up by great aunts, but I just said 'no thanks' like Julia's fire brigade. Another brilliant offering Julia.
Christmas at your house sounds wonderful Julia, even with two fires! I love how you write these posts, starting with an anecdote and then ending with the recipe with some fascinating history thrown in along the way. This is a great newsletter.
And I am almost tempted to try and make my own mincemeat in spite of how not fond I am of mince pies...
You've made me laugh!! I've been banned from live decorations forever! If you don't like mincemeat, I really recommend that pastry for other things - it's short and crisp and doesn't sog easily. I'm really pleased you like the blog.
Julia, Have you considered re-creating a recipe for savory mincemeat, containing minced meat? I wonder if we would like the taste nowadays.

Golly, that's a thought. And one that makes me a little queasy, I confess. But here is one - if you'd like to give it a try. It gets a 5-star rating. I might give it a go... https://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/traditional-mincemeat/

This sounds as though it would be fun to make. I never had a recipe for mincemeat but I buy it in jars every year to make pie.
What's nice about it is it's only really a chopping job. And small jars of it make good presents. Have a go!

Hehe! So pleased! Maybe you'll try it? Makes a good Thanksgiving pie..
Wonderful as always.!
