The ginger beer recipe I use comes with a cautionary note from the author, who served her homemade ginger beer at her children’s birthday party and had to call their parents to collect them early as they were all a little tipsy! I haven’t made ginger beer in ages - thanks for the prompt.
It sounds as though it might be the same one as my mother's recipe! My new batch, after years of not making any, is almost ready. I can't wait to test its effect!
What a spicy romp! Ginger beer would not have been in my mother’s bag of tricks. How delightful your mother knew how to tame a thirst on a hot summer day. Love the idea of bottles popping off!!! Family lore has that my husband’s great aunt died from “tainted bathtub root beer.” My MIL held the question could that home brew have been gin?
Being transported off by bathtub root beer or any other kind of bathtub concoction seems a not disagreeable way to go from one state to a definitive other.
Isn’t that the truth! Here in Kansas not hard to imagine an elixir fuelled bathtub swirling to the heavens on a tornado! Not a math lover either but looking forward to hearing how many bottles made it to the finish line.
Thank you for this shrub reminder! I made them regularly last summer but had completely forgotten about them until your happy reminder! I'll certainly start them again!
It's such a relief the Warring Periods seem to be over - bar one or two skirmishes sometimes erupting. In the end opinionated women make the most rewarding companions.
Delightful ramble through history, Julia, thank you! I too went through the Warring States period, not once but twice, first with my mother and sister and then all over again with my daughter. The problem with being strongly opinionated women.
Fascinating and erudite as always. Think you might have left out something on value of ginger in olden times. Even with inflation it was probably worth more than a little over a dollar😉
I know!! Utterly mortified! I immediately wrote this and published it to Notes but alas Tabled was already out there: ulia Watson

So bad at maths my teacher told me not to bother taking the exam, I apologise for writing in today's Tabled that ginger’s global market is worth $1.51. Would you credit such stupidity. It is if course over $5 billion.

Ginger is a lovely addition to a shrub-- somewhat simpler to make than ginger beer, and guaranteed to be non-alcoholic.

“And on the seventh day, Julia strained the liquid…”
I did! I did! And now, on the ninth day, I'm waiting to hear how many bottles explode!
