(*Deliberate tautology) This Tabled comes to you four days early as the subject is so topical. I will repost on Wednesday for those who prefer to read it as usual then.
I love this hard hitting and well informed (boy do we need well informed writing right now) post. You’re so right to point out droughts are as important as flooding in the water crisis.
I live in the middle of the USA—often called the bread basket—where fertile soil is regularly contaminated with chemicals and just today’s in our local paper we’re informed about our city’s wastewater plant that churns out bio solids for farmers to add more to the forever chemical stew. We are officially in drought as we have been for the last several years. Over zealous farming is draining our aquifer a several state bed of once seemingly vast supply of water.
Add to the international tariff mess created by a mad man, interesting times indeed. I’m glad to be 75!
I’ve read that a cynic is a failed optimist. I am a card carrying member. What if… the world had come together to save our world? I understand the Bezos wedding might have to have been on the beach with a potluck reception but we all would be working together. All of us would be doing what was good all over the world. All of this male driven greed for world domination is terrifying. Be glad you are no longer here.
Totally off topic: do you have a bathroom/inside access to your kitchen? Can I erase the image of you dashing out in the rain to go upstairs? My knees hurt thinking about this!
I can get from the kitchen to the loo indoors! But when I was running HotelForTwo, there were months when my loo in the bothy.being built around me that I lived in in the garden above it was a bucket. But you don't want to know that.
Hilarious! My late in life full gut kitchen reno took 3 years! I cooked in the basement. No potty! Sometimes the powder room on first floor was in rehab—so up two flights of stairs! It was during that time I changed from finally getting gas to going induction. Only regret when we have power outages. During tornado warnings the basement loo is the 5 gallon bucket!
I think you should write about your kitchen remodel! Plus the fact you have made kitchens all over the world. Impressive!
This is so depressing to read. It is hard to imagine what gyrations go on in the heads of officials and others with the authority or drive to act in ways that destroy the environment. that allows the to sleep peacefully.
Coffee trivia: where is the highest per capita coffee consumption in Europe?
Randomly this morning when I taught swimming, there was a list of coffee trivia questions used in an exercise class.
My students, average age 4, were more interested in Cookie Monster and rainbow trees but I definitely had a cup of coffee before and after teaching. Fortunately we are used to crap coffee in America or tarted up drinks with foam and sweetener so ... who knows how this will land. But I love
Once we were perturbed enough to toss tea into the harbor when taxed without representation so here's hoping electoral reform is on the horizon. And while I'm hoping.. May certain lawmakers find a spine. Happy to report a Roos the pond to you that there were loads of folks out on the streets yesterday voicing their objections to the current regime.
You may be surprised to learn that top of the coffee poles in Europe are the Finns at 4 cups day, according to one poll. But of course there's another, that puts the Germans at 7 cups. I find that hard to imagine - after my one coffee, albeit with two tablespoons of espresso to make it, I can't stop talking till lunchtime. What I never understood about that tea incident is that despite tossing it into the briny, we still didn't get representation.
I admire the coffee culture in both Finland and Germany...
We did manage to rid ourselves of birthright royalty... this last gasp of the white male hegemony that we are currently witnessing is perhaps the stepping stone reminder we needed to finish the job we started.
Fun fact: I once worked as a historic interpreter on the Boston Tea Party ship... some days colonial girl some days sailor complete with period costume and rigging climbing.
don't forget 44% tariffs on Sri Lanka tea and cinnamon! and similar rates for virtually every country that supplies tea: China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, ... I can see flood of investors setting up tea farms in the US 😁
And that would be GENUINE cinnamon not the Chinese impostor most are more familiar with. As to tea, if future teas in the US are anything like Red Rose label, drinkers with a palate will be paying well over the odds for a tea worth swallowing.
Darn my coffee and shortsightedness not to stockpile! Time to rectify my 'sophisticated' palate...drink cheaper forms of feelgood.🙃we must address the real issues of food and water scarcity and the hegemony of certain corporates too. Fabulous article Julia never a more important time to discuss this.
Thank you, thank you! Of course, the cheapest feel good liquid is water. And what shall we do about that? Why aren't these crises being addressed by those who can? Money, do you suppose?
Well one of my clients was a big industrial who was responsible for water scarcity and my follow up question was 'and what else'...splutter splutter....money had their eye on the matter a long time ago ...
I just wonder what the oligarchs expect to spend their money on when food is scarce (though of course they will have first dibs) and the water gone and Mars not yet fitted with banking.

Coffee - how could we live without it!
Thank you so much! I just wish we weren't being given cause to write about these events - and so regularly.

We should start a Kitchen Correspondents Club...

Seriously? I have three strong double-shot lattes every morning. I rarely feel the effect of caffeine.
My friends feel the effects of my caffeine intake more than I do
